Mentor Program
Advanced collegiate music students 18-23 years old are encouraged to apply for an Internship position. Acceptance will be based on an audition tape and/or previous participation in the Blaine Jazz Festival. Interns will be accepted by and work directly with a specific faculty-mentor. Interns perform in an advanced combo and in bands or jazz choir as needed, providing leadership and guidance from the back of their section. Occasionally interns will be asked to assume principal or solo roles when the repertoire is especially challenging. Additional duties vary but may include offering assistance to younger students during their private practice hours and assisting with meals and clean up at Smugglers Inn and assisting with technical set up for concerts.
Master Classes & Private Lessons
All interns are guaranteed participation in their instrument's masterclass.
Compensation
Interns receive a $250 tuition waiver scholarship to attend, plus free room and board as needed. Interns are responsible for their own travel expenses and are required to room at Smugglers Inn unless alternate arrangements are approved prior to the festival. One year of college with classes in music required. Students who are graduating this year and are 18 are welcome to attend as regular students of the festival.
When registering as a mentor, please fill out the registration form and write (mentor) after your last name. Then fill out the scholarship form and ask a teacher to recommend you. If you have previously attended the festival, note the names of your instructors and we'll contact them regarding a recommendation for you.
